As an aerospace manufacture of complex parts, going through the AS9100 certification process can be expensive as well as painful if you don’t have the right personnel or resources to accomplish such a goal. Our goal was to be AS9100 compliant, but after meeting and consulting with Bretta Kelly we changed our goal to not just be compliant but certified within three months. We documented our system to the latest AS9100C standard in less than two weeks using Bretta’s AS9100 templates / programs and passed our customer’s AS9100 compliance audit follow up with no issues. We will be registered to AS9100B before the end of the year. As an owner of a Semiconductor Assembly company, I have dreaded for over 5 years the day I would have to put in place a program for obtaining our ISO certification. Two simple reasons, (1) Cost of manpower to implement a system that by most consultants advice is paperwork heavy and didn’t make sense for a Lean and Fast moving Service Company. After many meetings with customers that implemented an ISO program we opted for achieving what we called ISO compliant, Not Certified. (2) After numerous meetings with many consultants over the last two years we were quoted outrages costs for their services plus the actual Auditors cost, which totaled in access of $40K and some exceeded $50K. Our unique services allowed our company to do business the past 5 years with Fortune Five Hundred companies both commercial and military applications. Our General Manager, Keith Dungan would always comment, “For $50K we can purchase production equipment to be more productive, not a paperwork nightmare”. This scenario has been in existence up until our introduction to CIS just 3 months ago.
Advotech was introduced to CIS through a member of a technical group we were affiliated with. Like all business, you sometimes just know when something is right and you say, “Lets go for it”. Our first meeting with Bretta Kelly, President of BMSC, LLC consulting got our attention real quick when she stated, “This is not rocket science and you don’t need to purchase the rocket”. After our first meeting it was clear we were going for it with confidence. The biggest problem facing EDM shops is legacy production processes that are not flexible in our rapidly-changing manufacturing environment. What we need, as legacy shops, is a quick-reference and easy-to-use system that helps us adapt to our changing customer needs and requirements. CIS is just that. The tab system allows us to see all aspects of continuous improvement, from Nonconformity to Customer Feedback to Inspection. Many of our customers are requiring us to track our performance and to respond to their own record of our performance. CIS allows us to not only be one step ahead of our customer in order to meet their needs before they ask, but it allows us to spend as little time as possible maintaining that path. The entry system is quick and paperless. In fact, the system can even reduce the current amount of manufacturing-related paperwork. CIS keeps us organized, keeps our customers continually more impressed, and has even made enduring and passing audits faster and much less stressful. From customer audits, to our AS9100 audit to the dreaded Nadcap audit, CIS made the process smooth!

If I simply told you that we received our ISO 9001:2000 registration after several months of partnering with Bretta Kelly, it would be a sufficient testimonial to the efficacy of her consulting efforts. However, there is more to the story.
We started on the road to ISO 9001 registration in 1999. At that time, our operational strategy was to employ a full time individual who would manage both our product quality control and the ISO 9001 quality program. Based on this individual’s experience, we trained to and implemented many of the ISO 9001:1994 guidelines during 1999-2000 but did not complete our implementation.
With a second full time employee, we started a renewed effort in late 2003. The registration guidelines had changed to ISO 9001:2000. While this individual had worked under ISO guidelines, he had never implemented an ISO 9001 system and required substantial investment of company funds to attend ISO related training courses. While our company did implement additional processes and procedures per the ISO 9001:2000 quality standard, this individual was ultimately not successful in conveying the spirit of the ISO quality system to us and forging a common purpose among our employees that would be needed to achieve registration.
In view of our past history, we changed our company strategy in August, 2005 by 1) separating the functions of product quality manager and ISO quality system management representative and assigning these functions to two individuals, and 2) hiring a knowledgeable ISO quality systems consultant to assist the Management Representative and management team to complete our implementation in a timely manner.
We identified a short list of three ISO consulting companies and invited them for interviews at our offices. Bretta Kelly was the unanimous choice of our management team. We were very fortunate to have found an individual who is not only ISO 9001:2000 knowledgeable but who also understands business, possesses both common sense and a sense of humor, communicates well with all employees and is a good human being. Bretta made a difference!
Our drive towards registration was accelerated by the adoption of TQMS’s Continuous Improvement Software which minimizes the need for hardcopy documentation and maximizes communication throughout the company.
I am pleased to report that we received our certificate of registration for ISO 9001:2000 on March 1st, 2006. The recent registration audit of our quality system and business practices did not find a single minor or major nonconformance. This achievement is the latest in a series of ongoing changes to our business infrastructure designed to help us better serve our customers.
